Measure By The Foot is a project to help teach measurement in a fun way in your classroom.

MATERIALS
Each participating class will need 1 piece of construction paper per student. You will also need a long straight area, somewhere in their school, where you are able to lay out the feet to get a final measurement!

INSTRUCTIONS

Create a class estimate of how many "feet" there are in your classroom.

After you have made your "guesstimate"
1. Students will choose 1 of their feet
to trace and cut out. (team students up to assist each other)
2. Students measure the length of
their (bare) foot.
3. The entire class will create a long line of feet (heel to toe) and measure the total length of the class in feet.
(feel free to measure in centimeters but for this project, the results will need to be submitted by feet/inches)

Teachers will add the following data to the project results form:
a. The total length of all the feet combined
(in feet and inches).
b. How many students (number of feet) are involved in this project.

Teachers are encouraged to use the provided worksheets and weblinks to expand this project.

Dates to submit data will be
January 24 to February 18, 2011

You might also wish to measure distances
on your campus.
For example: how many "feet" to the principal's office, to the drinking fountain, to the playground, to the car pickup, the length of the blackboard/whiteboard/smartboard, etc. Have fun with your "feet".

Registration for this project is now closed.
